What Does it Cost?

The cost of your evaluation from Rational Therapeutics™ depends upon the extent of your clinical work-up. You may choose to have either the ex vivo analyses (EVA) assay or a clinical consultation with Dr. Nagourney, or both, depending on your needs and cost considerations.
Ex Vivo Analysis-Programmed Cell Death (EVA-PCD™) Laboratory Analysis: $3,500*
The EVA-PCD™ Assay is a "functional profile" that is based on cellular apoptosis, or cell death. Once a living sample of tumor is obtained, the cells will be exposed to various chemotherapy drugs. Highly trained and licensed clinical laboratory scientists will determine which drugs kill these cancer cells (induce programmed ceall death) and which drugs do not. This analysis identifies an individual patient's sensitivity and resistance to standard drug therapies and novel combinations. Each patient's dose response analysis of drug sensitivity, resistance, and formal synergy is then compared with Rational Therapeutics' extensive tissue database. An Ex Vivo Best Regimen (EVBR®) recommendation is then identified.
The use of this "functional profile" prior to any chemotherapy treatment enables the treating physician to administer those agents with the highest probability of improving the patient's outcome and minimizing possibly ineffective, toxic therapies.
The comprehensive report includes a descriptive analysis of the laboratory findings, extensive literature references, and recommendations for the treating physician.
*Occasionally a specimen is received where we are unable to successfully complete a reliable evaluation. In such a case, there is a $350 laboratory set-up charge to cover the partial cost of reagents and tumor disaggregation.
Clinical Consultation: $500
An on-site clinical consultation with Dr. Robert Nagourney includes an overall assessment of the patient's condition, a physical examination, as well as a review of medical records and therapies to date. Dr. Nagourney conducts an in-depth, comprehensive interview to ascertain the philosophy and treatment goals of each individual patient. An extensive report will be written outlining Dr. Nagourney's opinions and recommendations.
What about third-party reimbursement?
Currently, Medicare and most managed-care plans do not pay for the cost of our laboratory analysis. Some indemnity insurance companies may pay for part or all of our services. The fee for the laboratory assay is required at the time of service. As a courtesy, Rational Therapeutics™ will file a claim with your insurance carrier in an attempt to help you recover your out-of-pocket expense.
