By "functionally profiling" drugs and drug combinations on a patient's living tumor sample, Rational Therapeutics's Ex Vivo Analyses (EVA) can aid in determing the best treatment options for each individual patient.
The EVA analysis of human tumors provides a novel, real-time view of how tumors act within their natural microenvironment. Examining small clusters of cancer cells or microspheroids in their native state, the EVA analysis can identify both apoptotic and non-apoptotic cell death events, in addition to other cell behavior after exposure to a variety of agents.
Following the collection of living cancer cells obtained at the time of biopsy or surgery, Rational Therapeutics performs its Ex Vivo Analysis-Programmed Cell Death (EVA-PCD) functional profile on the patient’s tumor sample in the laboratory to measure drug activity. Each microspheroid examined contains all the complex elements of tumor bio-systems that are found in the human body and can impact clinical response. By selecting the drugs most effective at killing a patient’s tumor cells in the laboratory, Rational Therapeutics is able to recommend the treatment option with the highest probability of improving the patient's outcome and avoiding possibly ineffective, toxic therapies.
Despite the appeal of gene and protein based methods (utilizing dead, formaldehyde preserved cells), these techniques cannot measure the complex behavior of cancers in response to injury. "Functional Profiling" is the only approach that can answer these complex questions.
